This Gallery is DEDICATED to the late Tom Carter !!

I believe that Tom Carter, who passed away in early 2007, was the biggest collector of Marvel sketchagraph and sketch cards, in the world. He was also my best friend in this hobby. We first made contact in 2000 when we did our first trade ... and of course, it was MSA. Over the next year, I realized that he was REAL SERIOUS about collecting the MSA sketches, and I would defer to him, since I knew I could not compete with his collection. I was satisfied being at best, #2.

In late 2001, when a certain collector offered to sell his entire MSA collection, I was surprised that Tom "couldn't afford it". He really wanted a lot of the sketches, and since I wanted him to have the best MSA collection, I financed the venture. I then let him have about 100 of the best sketches from that collection, for a nominal price each. He paid me for them over the next two years. This seemed to "cement" our sketch card friendship !!

Also, for both of us, our favorite comic book was the Fantastic Four ... so we had something else in common. In 2006, he started to sell his MSA Ribeiro FF storyline sketches to me, so that I could merge them with mine. I was never quite sure why he did that !!

So when Tom passed away, and his MSA collection was put in the hands of K&J Non-sports Cards, I am grateful that they sold me Tom's entire collection. I really want to keep as much of it intact as I can !! I have merged into my own collection, the nearly 100 sketches that I mentioned above; some others that I had acquired for him over the subsequent years; some that I had reluctantly traded to him (including the first one I mentioned above ); and several "beauties" that I didn't ever realize he had !! The result of this merger can be seen in this Gallery, as well as in MSA Gallery #2.

I have and will continue to miss Tom

I would like to think that Tom would be HAPPY knowing that I have his collection now ?

Many of you who know me well, knows that my main passion within the Marvel Comics Universe comes from the fact that I grew-up in the Silver-Age (SA). So over the last few years, I have seriously decided to go after these sketchagraphs from true legends of the Comic Book Industry.

For this web site, I have found it better to scan the entire 9-pocket (a.k.a. page), rather than to put each sketch up as an individual scan. Besides for those of you who know me, I am very obsessive about how my pages are arranged

Currently I have 32 "full" pages of sketchagraphs in this Gallery. Below, I give a brief summary of what is in each page, just to the right of the thumbnail for that page.

Note: Click the thumbnail to open a new window to see a larger-size view of the page.

Table 2: The 5 Modern-day artists who drew MSA Sketchagraph cards

Schaefer Page1

Page 1: This is TRIBUTE TO JACK KIRBY Page 1 !!

The photo of an aged Jack 'The King' Kirby is card #100 from the 1992 card set Famous Comic Book Creators. This page and the next, is to honor the Fantastic Four, the comic that is supposed to have started the Marvel Silver Age, and the revival of Super Heroes in the early 1960's.

Dan Schaefer is one of the five "Modern-day" artists who drew sketchagraphs for the MSA series. I think his MSA FF sketches are very much like Kirby's FF stuff ! His Silver Surfer sketchagraphs (slot 5 & 9) looks to me, just like the Kirby Surfer !!

I believe that I have all 13 of the variations that Schaefer drew for MSA; the Torch (slot 3), Medusa (slot 8) and full-body Silver-Surfer (slot 9) are "rarer" than the others on this page !!

Schaefer Page2

Page 2: This is TRIBUTE TO JACK KIRBY Page 2

This is the second page of Dan Schaefer's MSA sketchagraphs, showing the other six. The J. Storm (slot 3) are "rarer" than the others on this page !! I have both variations that Schaefer drew of the Watcher (slots 5 & 6), which Kirby also drew differently over the years.

As mentioned on Page 1 above, Schaefer's sketches are very much like Jack Kirby drew the FF. The Namor's Love (in slot 3) looks like very early Kirby FF ... this sketch is a scene from FF #4.

To fill the page, I have decided to add sketches from another of the other "Modern-day" artists who drew sketchagraphs for MSA, Anthony Castrillo. I believe I have 6 of the 7 variations of sketches that he did. In row 3, are more Jack Kirby characters ... two Silver Surfer's and a Hulk vs. Thing. Like the Palmer's, Castrillo's sketchagraphs also supposedly never made it into the packs; are also considered "rare"; and has the same debate as to whether they are "true" MSA sketchagraphs or not.

Dutkiewicz Page1

Page 3: Michael Dutkiewicz is another of the "Modern-day" artists.

His inked style is kind of "heavy" for me. The three main storylines that he did his sketchagraphs for I am not too familiar, with since they appear to be from the latter portion of the SA. I believe I have all 24 variations of the sketchagraphs that he drew for MSA. If someone out there knows of others I would appreciate the info and a scan of it

One of the storylines is from the Skrull-Kree War of Avengers #93-97. On this page, I put in chronological order, the 9 portrait-oriented sketches. I would like to thank Bill Furrer for his help in arranging them for me

Dutkiewicz Page2

Page 4: Michael Dutkiewicz Page #2.

On this page I put his 9 landscape-oriented sketchagraphs, and displayed this page oriented as such.

Row 1 has one of the two that he drew for Avengers #58 (the coming of Vision), and the only two landscape-oriented ones that I think he did for Avengers 93-97.

The next two rows are from the second main storyline (X-Men #57-59), a set of comics that I had read, but don't recall the story. So if someone can tell me what order to put these 6 sketches in I would appreciate it

Dutkiewicz Page3

Page 5: Michael Dutkiewicz Page #3.

On this page I put the rest of his portrait-oriented sketches.
I liked the ones for Silver Surfer issue #1 - #3 storyline (slots 1-4), since I actually still have an issue of #1 (which was originally drawn by John Buscema).
The last two are his second one from Avengers #58 (slot 5), and seventh one from X-Men #57-59 (slot 6).

To fill the page, I have added 3 more sketches from Anthony Castrillo, (see page 2 above). In row 3, are his two of Spidey vs SA foes, and his "split-personality" Professor X and Magneto.

Silver Age Czop Page1

Page 6: John Czop Page 1

Of the five "Modern-day" artists who drew sketches for MSA, I especially found the inked sketches of John Czop of greatest interest. To me, his style is very much like that of Jack Kirby.

Note the concept of two sketchagraphs, one half has the supporting good guys; the other half has the supporting bad guys. I liked the way he also did "companion" sketches with the bad guys for certain of the heroes; e.g. I got the Sinister Six to go with Spidey 1 and 2 sketches.

The Avengers I sketch is very rare. If I recall from a conversation that I had with him years ago, Czop told me he only did 10 of them ?

Note: I have all the Czop sketches from the MSA card series ... inked b/w, inked colored, and even the penciled Cap.

Silver Age Czop Page2

Page 7: John Czop Page 2 (and TRIBUTE TO JACK KIRBY Page 3)

This is the second page of John Czop's MSA sketchagraphs. Aside from the FF, three of Kirby's other great creations were Thor, Captain America and X-Men. As mentioned before, I consider Czop's style very Kirby-ish, so I put Czop's three FF-themed sketchagraphs here (slots 1, 2, 3). I added his Warriors Three (Thor supporting characters, that resides in Asgard), and the two inked Captain America halves, and his less-common penciled version of Captain America I sketch, to round-out the page.

I could have put Czop's X-Men sketch here, but when I found a variant of the Masters of Evil sketch (Whirlwind with no shading), I added it to this page (slots 4 & 5).

MSA Colored Czop Page

Page 8: John Czop colored sketches.

Czop colored some of his inked MSA sketchagraphs, and they were beautifully done !! I believe I have all eight of the pack-inserted colored Czop's. But there is a debate as to whether any of the "few" Czop colored Avengers I sketches made it into the packs or not. To fill that potential hole in slot 7, I got Czop to do me a commissioned colored Avengers I

Silver Age Czop Page3

Page 9: A John Czop prototypes Page.

I first acquired the seven sketches in slots 1&2 (Dr Strange I & II), slot 3 (Lethal Legion), slots 4&5 (Dr Strange I & II), and slots 7&8 (Hulk I & II), in 2001. I was told that they were "prototypes" that Czop submitted to Skybox. For whatever reason, after they were stamped, they were not put into the packs. Since I like Czop's MSA stuff so much, I reacquired these

In 2010, I added this variant penciled Sinister Six (slot 6); compare to the inked one on page 6 above. I had thought Czop only did a penciled variant for the Captain America I (page 7 above).

Ribeiro Commons Page

Page 10: Emir Ribeiro "Commons" page.

Emir Ribeiro is one of the 5 "Modern-day" artists who drew sketchagraphs for MSA. He decided to do his as interpretations of classic scenes from key issues of SA-era comics. To me some of Ribeiro's sketches are kind of "cartoony", but still a nice "unique" inked style.

Ribeiro started-out drawing SIX series of "story line" sketchagraphs, each one being unique. I especially like these because I AM IMPRESSED by the way he interprets the story, and retells it using only pictures ... no dialogue boxes as in the original comic book !! See some of these in the following pages.

But apparently as the deadline for submitting his quota of MSA sketchagraphs approached, Ribeiro had to "crank-out" blocks of the same sketchagraphs, thus he did many of these "common" ones as shown on this page. I believe there are 11 common ones (?). I put 9 of them on this page. The other two are on Page 18 below.

Ribeiro Spidey Page1

Page 11: Emir Ribeiro Amazing Fantasy #15 page 1.

I currently have 37 of the "story line" sketchagraphs that Ribeiro did for "Origin of Spider-Man", as first told in Amazing Fantasy #15. To help tell the story better, I commissioned Ribeiro to redraw for me, 8 of his original sketchagraphs.

This page shows the beginning of the story, where we are introduced to Peter Parker, Aunt May and Uncle Ben, and Peter's schoolmates. Then some scenes up to when Peter first gets bitten by the spider.

Ribeiro Spidey Page2

Page 12: Emir Ribeiro Amazing Fantasy #15 page 2.

This page continues the story after Peter is bitten. He starts to learn about his new powers, realizes that they are caused by the spider bite, and then gets the idea to enter the wrestling challenge.

Ribeiro Spidey Page3

Page 13: Emir Ribeiro Amazing Fantasy #15 page 3.

This page continues the story where Peter makes his wrestling disguise, and then wins the challenge. Afterwards, he is offered $ to appear on TV. He decides to make a real costume/disguise, including web shooters.

Ribeiro Spidey Page4

Page 14: Emir Ribeiro Amazing Fantasy #15 page 4.

This page tells the tragic part of the story. After Spidey shows-off his new costume and web shooters on TV, Spidey doesn't stop the burglar at the TV station. When Peter comes home, he finds-out that Uncle Ben was killed by a burglar.

Ribeiro Spidey Page5

Page 15: Emir Ribeiro Amazing Fantasy #15 page 5.

This page concludes the story with the classic ending. An angry Spidey heads off to find the burglar, and tracks down the burglar into a warehouse, captures him, and when he sees the burglars face, realizes it was the burglar at the TV station, that he didn't stop. At this point he decides that 'With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility !!

Ribeiro Av#1 Page1

Page 16: Emir Ribeiro Avengers #1 page 1 .

I have only 19 of the "story line" sketchagraphs that Ribeiro did for Avengers #1. To help tell the story better, I commissioned Ribeiro to redraw for me, 7 of his original sketchagraphs.

This page shows the beginning of the "Origin of the Avengers", where Loki uses one of his illusions to trick the Hulk into damaging the train tracks. Rick Jones knows the Hulk wouldn't do something like that, so he calls the FF for help to exonerate the Hulk, but the message is picked-up by Dr. Don Blake (Thor).

Ribeiro Av#1 Page2

Page 17: Emir Ribeiro Avengers #1 page 2.

The story continues as Rick Jones' call is also picked-up by Iron Man and Ant-Man/Wasp. The heroes gather for the first time, and the adventure begins. Thor is lured away from the others when he sees the Hulk, but it is actually another of Loki's illusions. Meanwhile the real Hulk battles against Iron Man and Ant-Man/Wasp.

Ribeiro Av#1 Page3

Page 18: Emir Ribeiro Avengers #1 page 3.

Unfortunately, Emir chose not to draw any sketches for the part of the story where Thor realizing that Loki is behind the illusions, goes to Asgard and captures Loki.

This last page shows where Thor brings Loki to Earth, and tells the others how Loki tricked them. Ant-Man then has the idea that they should form a team called the Avengers. The others agree !!

Slots 8 & 9 have the last of the 11 common Ribeiro sketchagraphs. They are the two of Captain America as shown in Avengers #4.

Ribeiro FF#1 Page1

Page 19: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #1 page 1.

I currently have 19 of the "story line" sketchagraphs that Ribeiro did for FF#1. To help tell the story better, I commissioned Ribeiro to redraw for me, 7 of his original sketchagraphs.

This page shows 8 of the 9 I have for the first half of that issue ... the "Origin of the Fantastic Four". Our motley foursome drives under the cover of darkness to sneak aboard their ill-fated rocket, which is bombarded with cosmic rays, causing them to crash-land back on Earth.

Ribeiro FF#1 Page2

Page 20: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #1 page 2.

This page completes the first half of the issue. Upon crash-landing, each member of the crew is transformed. In the last panel, they agree to become a team.

Row 3 shows 3 of the 10 I have for the second half of issue #1 ... the "The Fantastic Four Meets the Moleman". This is essentially the FF's first mission, where they go to Monster Isle to investigate the sitings of strange creatures.

Ribeiro FF#1 Page3

Page 21: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #1 page 3.

This page shows 7 of the 10 I have for the second half of issue #1. Upon arriving at Monster Isle, the FF discover that the Moleman is controlling these underground creatures. They confront the Moleman whom calls his largest monster. The FF defeats the monster, and heads back to their jet, when the battle causes a cave-in which they think has buried the Moleman.

Ribeiro FF#4 Page1

Page 22: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #4 page 1.

I currently have 34 of the "story line" sketchagraphs that Ribeiro did for FF#4. To help tell the end of the story better, I commissioned Ribeiro to redraw for me, 3 of his original sketchagraphs. This issue had one story, "The Coming of the Submariner" ... the FF's first encounter with Prince Namor, the Submariner.

This page has the first part of the story where Johnny has run-off from the team. The Thing finds him first and after a brief tiff, Johnny runs off to the Bowery to hide. There he happens to encounter the Submariner, whom has apparently lost his memory (since WWII), and is wandering NYC as a derelict ... talk about a fish out of water !!

Ribeiro FF#4 Page2

Page 23: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #4 page 2.

This page tells the part of the story where a revitalized Submariner, believes that Atlantis has been destroyed by the humans, says he will seek revenge. Later, Johnny informs the rest of the team of Namor's threat.

Ribeiro FF#4 Page3

Page 24: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #4 page 3.

This page tells the part of the story where Namor awakens Gigantor, using a "magic" trumpet, and Gigantor heads towards NYC. Mr. Fantastic is unable to stop it via gas from the Fantasti-car, so Reed comes-up with the idea of having the Thing carry an A-bomb inside of Gigantor.

Ribeiro FF#4 Page4

Page 25: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #4 page 4.

This page tells the end of the story, after the FF has defeated Gigantor, and confronts Namor. After the bomb goes off inside of Gigantor, Namor is about to use the trumpet to call more sea monsters, so Sue steals the trumpet from him. Namor catches her and falls for her for the first time (per Schaefer's MSA sketchagraph titled 'Namor's Love'... see page 2, slot 1). The rest of the team shows up, and the Torch creates a twister that drives Namor and the dead(?) Gigantor, back into the sea.

Ribeiro FF#12 Page1

Page 26: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #12 page 1.

I currently have 21 of the "story line" sketchagraphs that Ribeiro did for FF#12. This issue had one story, "The Fantastic Four Meet the Hulk" ... the FF's first encounter with the Hulk. To help tell the story better, I commissioned Ribeiro to redraw for me, 1 of his original sketchagraphs.

This page shows where the U.S. Army tried to capture the Thing (out on a date with Alicia), thinking he is the Hulk. General Ross then shows the FF photos and film of the Hulk. Ross enlists their help in stopping the Hulk whom is accused of creating sabotage at the Army's weapons lab, where Bruce Banner and Rick Jones happen to be working.

Ribeiro FF#12 Page2

Page 27: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #12 page 2.

This page shows the FF flying to the weapon's lab and meeting with Banner. When Rick Jones discovers the actual saboteur is a scientist at the lab, Karl Kort, Rick is taken hostage. The FF is then involved in another round of sabotage.

Ribeiro FF#12 Page3

Page 28: Emir Ribeiro Fantastic Four #12 page 3.

The FF goes under the lab to search for Rick, and encounters the Hulk. However, I don't have the ones that show the epic battle between the Hulk and the Thing, nor the end of the story where the FF discovers that Kort is holding Rick So I commissioned Ribeiro to redraw one of his original sketchagraphs, showing the Hulk battling the Thing (slot 4).

Slots 5 and 6 have two of Ribeiro's redraws that over-flowed from their respective pages, so I put them here as fillers.

Ribeiro Hulk Page1

Page 29: Emir Ribeiro Hulk #1 page 1.

I currently have 38 of the "story line" sketchagraphs that Ribeiro did for Hulk #1. To help tell the story better, I commissioned Ribeiro to redraw for me, 3 of his original sketchagraphs.

This issue was separated into two stories ... the first was the classic gamma explosion accident, and the second was a Commie mutant named the Gargoyle trying to enslave Rick and the Hulk.

This page shows the "Origin of the Hulk", from the first time Bruce Banner becomes the Hulk (trying to save the trespassing Rick Jones), when the spy (Igor) triggers the Gamma bomb early. The military come to see what happened but the Hulk lashes out.

Ribeiro Hulk Page2

Page 30: Emir Ribeiro Hulk #1 page 2.

This page continues the story. The Hulk goes back to his lab, discovering the spy (Igor). The Hulk disables Igor. The Hulk reverts back to Banner, just as the military arrives. After Igor is taken away, Betty Ross shows-up to find-out what happened to Bruce.

Ribeiro Hulk Page3

Page 31: Emir Ribeiro Hulk #1 page 3.

This page continues the story. From his cell, Igor informs the Gargoyle (in Russia) about the presence of the Hulk. Bruce and Rick drive to the desert fearing that Bruce will become the Hulk again. Bruce changes again near Betty's home and she faints at the sight of him. The Gargoyle shows up to capture the Hulk.

Ribeiro Hulk Page4

Page 32: Emir Ribeiro Hulk #1 page 4.

This page continues the story. The Gargoyle captures the Hulk and Rick, by turning them into "slaves". Meanwhile General Ross arrives and awakens Betty. During the plane flight to Russia, the Hulk reverts back to Banner. When they land, the Gargoyle realizes that the Hulk is actually Banner.

Ribeiro Hulk Page5

Page 33: Emir Ribeiro Hulk #1 page 5.

This page completes the story. The Gargoyle enlists Banner's help in curing him of his Gamma-ray based mutation. A grateful Gargoyle helps Bruce and Rick escape via a rocket that will send them back to the U.S. Meanwhile the Gargoyle blows-up the Russian base behind them.
